Big Green Theater in 2011
It’s hard to believe it’s already the end of January! Following a break for the holidays, Superhero Clubhouse’s Jeremy Pickard and Maria Portman Kelly are back at work with the writers at Still Waters in a Storm. Big Green Theater, our environmental education program which will culminate in a production of kid-written plays about the environment, is entering its second phase.
Every Tuesday afternoon in Bushwick, Jeremy, Maria, and volunteers from the neighborhood and The Bushwick Starr work with the young writers – first helping with homework, and then working on writing new plays inspired by important environmental topics. Several guest educators have visited Still Waters to act as expert resources for the kids, including Sarah Pidgeon from Solar 1, Dan Tainow from the Lower East Side Ecology Center and Lee Mandell from Boswyck Farms.
Check out our Big Green promotional video, featuring some of our Still Waters writers and volunteers:
And, as a small preview of the wonderful writing that will be onstage at The Bushwick Starr on April 22 and 23, here is an excerpt from a first draft play, written by Isiah (age 9) and Jonathan (age 8):

(A cormorant appears from the toilet.)
CORMORANT
I wasn’t eavesdropping… Or was I…?!
I was in the toilet holding my breath the whole time. I heard what you were trying to do. I’m going to help you (clean the East River). By the way, you should flush the toilet next time.
BOB THE SCIENTIST
Sorry! I’m a nerd, I was trying to save water!
BILLY THE SCIENTIST
Okay, let’s make this happen.
(They experiment!)
BOB THE SCIENTIST
Testing the pH!
BILLY THE SCIENTIST
Testing the oxygen!
BOB THE SCIENTIST
Testing the nitrates!
BILLY THE SCIENTIST
How many plankton?
CORMORANT
No no no! You’re swishing the wrong ones!
(EXPLOSION!)

We hope you’ll join us for our very first Big Green Theater event at The Bushwick Starr. Please check back for more updates as the plays take shape!
